Drug Aware Bruce Rock Youth Fest

To celebrate National Youth week 2014 young people from the Wheatbelt town of Bruce Rock developed a week long program of artistic skills development and  activities. Young coordinators engaged professional visual artist Sarah Kilgariff to teach skills in painting with acrylics as well as intertwining feelings into art.

The workshops covered a variety of techniques and skills including exploring colour symbolism, using different paint brush shapes, using acrylic paints and how to create the effects you want in your painting.

On the final day  a community celebration and sausage sizzle was held with various career and  information stands available. The art works created in the workshops were  displayed as part of the community celebration.

Acquittal comments: “Our artist Sarah taught us all sorts of painting skills. We learnt about colour symbolism and how it doesn’t always match general stereotypical symbols, as different colours mean different things for each person.”

“Sarah showed us ways to really recognise what makes us happy so that we could paint happiness and show the different ways to express it, through symbols, colours, lines, shapes, and abstract ideas.”

“While coordinating the project, I learnt how to communicate with all sorts of people, from friends, to big institutes, to community groups. I learnt how to manage time, how to prioritise listed items, and how to market to a target audience appropriately,” Project coordinator, 21 years.

“I enjoyed all the workshops. Emilee was so motivating the way she spoke on Monday. I enjoyed the painting on Wednesday. Friday night’s speaker was just amazing,” Participant, 21 years. (insert logos)
