Drug Aware YCulture unites Busselton youth with public art project

15 young people in Busselton engaged local Nyoongar artist Troy Bennell to run 7 visual arts workshops.
Throughout the workshops participants learnt spray painting skills and collaboratively designed a mural reflecting their community, culture and interests.
Troy intertwined teaching artistic skills with sharing stories and cultural knowledge and encouraging participants to work as team.
The resulting mural was painted on the outside of community organisation Stirling St Art Centre, giving participants pride in the prominent place of their artwork in the community.
The mural has a lasting place in the community and has contributed to the participants’ sense of belonging.
Young coordinator Tahlia Bennell reflected on the project:
“The mural is now part of Bunbury’s Rediscover street arts festival and is also part as ongoing walking tours.
The Drug Aware sponsorship kit was great because we got things that the people involved could use every day.”
