Albany is a port city in the Great Southern region of Western Australia.

The Vancouver Arts Centre is a community based arts organisation whose key purpose is to develop the creative capacity of their community. The Royalty for Regions Creative Regions investment into the arts organisation helped to deliver the ‘Snake Run’ project where local artists were given an opportunity to develop their skills and to add to the cultural life of their region. ‘Snake Run’ was a large-scale arts project delivered in partnership with the Perth International Arts Festival (PIAF).

The project celebrated the 40th anniversary of one of the oldest existing skate parks in the world generating huge interest from the community which helped to further showcase the work from local art workers. Most powerful of all was the chance to see the 14 local skateboarders perform and the sense of pride and accomplishment the men and boys felt when they described the creative process to their friends and family. This project represents the key role arts can play in celebrating life and community.

“The project delivered paid employment for many regionally based artists. Due to the partnership with PIAF, substantial resources made possible a three week creative development period for the team that directly contributed to a high-quality artistic outcome. Almost all artists live in the Great Southern and the skills development achieved through this project has already had an impact on their future work.”
