Frequently Asked Questions

I often hear the terms ‘good Governance’ and ‘Governance Standards’, what do these mean?

Governance Standards is the official term for the set of core, minimum standards required by Charities or Not for Profit organisations. More information can be found on the Australian Charities and Not for Profit website here.

Australia Council created a document on good Governance, have a read.

Where do I start with creating a policy for my organisation?

Our Community are one of Regional Arts WA’s go-to resources for policy templates. They are an excellent resource for ensuring your organisation practices good Governance.

For direction and information to your organisation’s board, we recommend you have a look at The Institute of Community Directors Australia policy bank.

We need to update our organisational forms and templates, do you have a basic version we can base ours on?

We are creating a set of forms and templates that we consider to be commonly used, which can be adapted to suit individual organisation needs. Check back on this page for more info soon.

Alternatively, if you have templates that benefit your operational requirements, send them through and we can add them to the list.

For performing arts CircuitWest also has a full selection of templates and advice you can use as a basis for your organisation’s own documents.

The Fairwork Ombudsman has an entire section on templates and best practice guides for the workplace, check it out!

Where can I go for affordable arts related legal advice?

We suggest you try the Arts Law Centre of Australia which provides free or low cost specialised legal advice, education and resources to Australian artists and arts organisations across all art forms. Arts Law’s ‘Artists in the Black’ program delivers targeted services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists nationally.

Another option you could try is Not-for-profit Law, a specialist legal service for community organisations that provides free or low cost, practical legal help and advocates for improved standards and legal frameworks.

If you are an artist you’re likely to qualify as a small business. The Small Business Development Commission offers legal essentials and a free dispute resolution service.

Do you have any advice for creating contracts?

We recommend taking a look at the Small Business Development Corporation’s section on contract advice.
