Bunbury is the third largest city in Western Australia in the South West region.
Community participation in art and cultural activities benefits an individual’s sense of worth and contributes to mental wellbeing and community connectedness. In 2015, Stirling Street Arts Centre, a not-for-profit community arts facility, delivered the Bunbury Summer School program with over 200 workshops including arts, craft, health, culture, food, music and dance.
The program attracted participants from a broad cross-section of the community, everyone aged between 5 to 95 years old at all abilities. It also forged partnerships with artists, community groups, businesses, local government and Aboriginal communities.
“The social impacts of Bunbury Summer School cannot be overstated. One of the recurring statements from participant feedback is how much fun people have learning as a group. This social aspect is as important as the learning itself. As a direct result of Bunbury Summer School 2016, some participants have gone on to join existing groups or form their own”
