The Voice star walks the line through regional WA with Johnny Cash tribute

Country Arts WA and Act-Belong Commit are excited to bring Monty Cotton and his Johnny Cash tribute show A Boy Named Cash to regional WA this July and August as a part of Shows on the Go.
Join the velvet-voiced Monty Cotton as he pays tribute to The Man in Black in a rollicking, rip-roaring set that’ll have you convinced you’re watching Johnny Cash himself.
From a job in financial management to singing Folsom Prison Blues, Perth-born performer Monty Cotton has had a storied career. In 2012, the singer quit an accounting job to pursue his dream of impersonating country music legend Johnny Cash. Three years later, Cotton was thrust into the national spotlight thanks to Channel 9’s The Voice.
Since then, Cotton has performed the Cash songbook across Australia and around the world, crooning classics on cruise ships, serenading shopping centres, leading singalongs in pubs and clubs, and even embodying the mythos of The Man in Black with a performance in a prison.
A Boy Named Cash’s regional WA run comes on the heels of a banner year for Monty Cotton that’s seen him play everywhere from a paddle steamer on the Swan River to sold out shows at the Perth, Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals.
Country Arts WA’s Investment Director, Philippa Maughan, says the Shows on the Go program’s success is owed to its community-driven approach, focused on bringing professional productions directly to regional and remote WA communities where they would otherwise not be able to travel independently.
“Country Arts WA is proud of our Shows on the Go program which has been running for over 20 years, supporting up to 40 communities and reaching more than 5,000 people each year. The demand for Shows on the Go is growing throughout regional WA, with more community organisations, local governments and first-time presenters looking to bring high quality performing arts to their town.
“Regional communities voted A Boy Named Cash as one of three Shows on the Go to tour in 2018. As part of the program, we support local presenters to build and engage their audiences and maximize the value of each visiting performance.”
The Shows on the Go program is presented by Country Arts WA and Healthway, promoting Act-Belong-Commit.
Healthway Chief Executive Officer Susan Hunt PSM, said that the organisation has proudly supported Shows on the Go since its inception, and this year will provide $110,000 to deliver the Act-Belong-Commit mental health message throughout this and other programs.
“Being active along with having a sense of belonging and purpose in life all contributes to good mental health and wellbeing.
“The Act-Belong-Commit message fits well with A Boy Named Cash, as it offers a great way for people in regional WA to come together, celebrate and enjoy the shared experience of reliving the classic songs of a musical legend,” Ms Hunt said.
