Championing arts accessibility in regional WA – Artist of the Month Paulette Jadzinski

Natalie de Rozario

In the vibrant arts community of Port Hedland, inclusivity and creativity go hand in hand, thanks to the efforts of The Junction Co., local artist Paulette Jadzinski, and her dedicated carer Jane Bolton. Together, they are reshaping the narrative around accessibility and artistic growth in regional Western Australia.

Paulette Jadzinski, Regional Arts WA’s Artist of the Month, is an emerging creative whose work captures the heart of her community. With guidance and encouragement from The Junction Co., Paulette has honed her craft through weekly creative workshops and mentorship programs at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio, including the Radius mentoring initiative. Her recent accolade—the Patron Prize at The Jury Art Prize 2024—celebrates her evocative painting Val, described by judges as “a joyous, candid, and human portrayal of a local by a local.”

For Valeria Scoponi, Regional Manager at The Junction Co., working with Paulette has been inspiring and deeply personal. “Paulette’s enthusiasm and dedication shine in everything she does,” Valeria shares. One standout moment was when Paulette painted a portrait of Valeria during a challenging time. “The portrait was a thoughtful gift, and it turned out to be a remarkably accurate and emotive representation. Seeing her talent grow has been a source of joy and pride for everyone here.”

Jane Bolton, Paulette’s carer, plays a crucial role in her artistic journey. Every week, Jane ensures Paulette has the opportunity to nurture her skills, offering unwavering support that has been vital to Paulette’s creative development. “Jane’s encouragement and dedication make all the difference,” Valeria notes.

Paulette’s success has also prompted meaningful reflections at The Junction Co. about the importance of accessibility and inclusion in the arts. Through their partnership with DADAA (Disability in the Arts, Disadvantage in the Arts, Australia), the team has embraced opportunities to learn and evolve. Their Access and Inclusion Program has sparked critical conversations and led to practical changes to better support individuals with diverse needs.

“Paulette’s journey reminds us that accessibility is about more than physical adjustments—it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels welcome and empowered to share their voice,” Valeria explains.

As regional WA continues celebrating diverse talents like Paulette’s, her story highlights the power of inclusive arts programs. By breaking down barriers and championing accessibility, communities like Port Hedland are setting the standard for embracing creativity.

We want to thank Paulette Jadzinski, Jane Bolton, Valeria Scoponi, The Junction Co., and Nicole Leuchter, Courthouse Gallery+Studio, for supporting and participating in our Artist of the Month program.

The Junction Co. is part of the Regional Arts Network, a statewide network of arts and cultural organisations that fosters a strong, connected, and capable regional arts and culture sector.
