Kookoo Kookaburra
Follow Kookoo and his friends in a heartwarming journey of story-telling, dancing and playing the didgeridoo.
Presented by Country Arts WA and Act-Belong-Commit.
Inspired by the Dreamtime, Kookoo Kookaburra tells the tale of a kind and well-loved kookaburra, famous for entertaining the bush creatures with his funny stories. Follow Kookoo and his friends in a journey of dancing, story-telling and didgeridoo, to learn that no matter how much fun you are having, you should always be respectful and kind.
One day Kookoo runs out of kind stories to tell so, he turns to teasing and making fun of the other animals. Refusing to listen to the sage advice of his uncle, Kookoo finds himself alone and ignored by his friends. When he listens to the sound of his own laughter, it is an unhappy sound. Finally he remembers his uncle’s wise words, ‘Kindness is like a boomerang – if you throw it often, it comes back often…’
Adapted from the Reader’s Choice Children’s Book of the Year from the 2016 Australian Book Industry Awards, this heartwarming story teaches children about the importance of friendship, respect and kindness in a fun, interactive performance of Indigenous culture and story-telling.
“..an important message about the power of words and the importance of being kind. This is a wonderful core for so many curriculum units in Humanities and Social Sciences, Health, English, Dreaming Stories, Art and just for sharing.” – Rhyllis Bignell, Audience Member
